Hey lets have a serious discussion about the artistic direction of video game aesthetics.

I think the environments look awesome, a kind of mix between Jet Set Radio and Super Mario Sunshine. Yet for some reason I absolutely can't stand the character designs... they are just really off putting to me, even though I guess they fit the setting well.

Maybe my brain is weird or I'm really picky about visual stuff.

It's kind of that big-headed Bratz/Monster High wannabe-anime kind of artstyle which is all the rage lately. Everyone looks like toys when they shouldn't, so I can see that complaint.
But if it's good and inexpensive enough I'll get it.

I love the designs. Also Bratz is creepy man, these squid guys are actually cute.

A lot of people are drawing comparisons to Jet Set Radio. Even Hideki Naganuma (JSR composer) tweets a lot about this. I really love the soundtrack and the overall playful vibe of the game. After Mario Zelda Mario Zelda, this is a huge breath of fresh air. I'm looking forward to it. I even made a Mii of one.
