Project Water Stream!

Postby Catnip » Fri Apr 17, 2015 7:17 pm

I guess I should post about this here. My new gaming/philanthropy initiative: a 24 hour straight stream to benefit Thirst Project, a clean water organization!

If you're interested, here are some links:
Our trailer for the event: youtube.com/watch?v=xPSCfjD-45c
Our Facebook page: facebook.com/TheWaterStream
Our donation page: my.thirstproject.org/WaterStream
More about Thirst Project: thirstproject.org
The Stream location itself: twitch.tv/Shiny_Catnip

I know and totally understand that not everyone can donate, but your Facebook like can help get the word out and be really really helpful!

The stream starts on May 16 at noon EST! Hope to see some of you there!

Oh cool, awesome that you're doing something about this, this was always one of the global issues I found most disconcerting, because of how much it ties into everything else.

I' definitely try to attend if I remember. Do you know what the money will go toward specifically? Water filtration systems, or?

That's a really good question and I appreciate that you're interested enough to ask that.

Thirst Project really goes right to the source of the problem and will go out to remote villages and drill wells. The water is already there - Thirst Project just makes it accessible. As for specifics for what the money raised by my particular initiative will go toward, I will definitely ask them, because that's a very fair question and transparency is something I really believe in. I'll definitely get back to you about this.

I will say this, though: they're a really grassroots organization. Everyone there is under ~27ish, it's a smallish group, and it was very easy to get in touch with them, and so far they've been super open. I can say with 100% confidence it's not like half of this money is secretly going to someone's oversea bank account so they can pay for their mansion.

I also agree, I feel like so many other problems stem from this lack of such a basic resource. That's part of the reason I've always been so passionate about it in particular.

No, I don't doubt that they have the best of intentions. It's just that sometimes with charities, money doesn't get used as effectively as it could. That's why I was curious.

Eric - Thank you so much! I really, really appreciate it.

Nightmare - Any bit helps! Just clicking on the page and viewing the stream for a second adds to the view count. Plus, you have 24 hours - pop in whenever you have a spare few minutes!

Goombachi - Still waiting on a response to your/my questions.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the double post, but I have received the answers to many questions from Thirst Project's Evan Wesley, with whom I've been working since day 1. Here's what he had to say:

"-All public donations go directly towards building water projects... nothing domestic, all international projects. Specifically the money raised will go towards our projects in Swaziland, where we are attempting to give the entire country of Swaziland clean water by 2022. So the money will go to the casings, fittings, and actual drilling of those wells!

-If you do a cost breakdown of a water well or a biosand filter (our main 2 water projects) it works out to be $25 can give one person clean water for life. For example, a well in Swaziland costs $12,000 and they typically service around 500 people. That cost breakdown per person would be $24 dollars per person!"

So that's that. Proceeds from our Water Stream event will be heading to Swaziland, and every $25 raised gives a person clean water for life. It's quite eye-opening to see how far the dollar can go for such basic needs.

Thank you, that is all the reassurance I needed. Will probably drop $25 during the stream.

It's really appreciated! And you've essentially given a person life, which is amazing.
